Dan
and Jodi Appleby, along with their children Kara, Kailee, and Caleb,
are missionaries with Mission Aviation Fellowship. Since 1993, the
Applebys have served in three locations worldwide. First, they were in
Tarakan, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, as an aviation mechanic family. In
2003, they relocated to Elizabethton, Tennessee, where Dan used his
skills as a mechanic to help train the next generation of mission
aviators in partnership with Moody Aviation. This training base was
moved to Spokane, Washington, in 2005, and this is where the Applebys
are currently located.

In his position as Director of Maintenance, Dan is responsible for the hands-on maintenance instruction of the students at Moody Aviation, and the airworthiness of the school’s ten aircraft. He also oversees the logistics involved in maintaining the aircraft and hangars. “It is very encouraging to know that those I am training will someday be on the mission field taking God’s Word to the world.”
In this new phase of mission service, Dan holds to Romans 8:28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” He shares, “God is gracious to provide the opportunity to serve with MAF in this strategic training for the mission field. We trust in our Savior through everything.”
Jodi’s role right now is primarily facilitating her family’s adaptation to life in the United States. She relates, “Everyday life here is quite different than life overseas. As the children settle into their respective schools and begin making friends, it’s encouraging to hear stories about them witnessing to their friends who are non-believers. God is using them and we are very proud to see them taking ownership in their faith.”
The Applebys are ready to serve the Lord wherever He leads them – be it overseas, or in the States. Ephesians 2:10, one of Jodi’s favorite verses, reflects this. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Jodi adds that this verse reminds her that she is a creation of a loving and caring God Who has a definite plan for her. “With this reminder, I can purpose to walk in faith and seek to do His will, no matter where we are.”
Dan was raised in Iowa, and accepted the Lord at age 9. While in high school he went on a mission trip to Mexico, where God showed him the need and that he could help fill it. Following high school, Dan attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, and graduating with a BS degree in Missionary Aviation Technology. He holds a private pilot’s license, an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license, and an Inspection Authorization.
Jodi was also raised in Iowa, and she became a Christian at age 5, following in the footsteps of her parents’ decision to receive Christ as their Savior. She attended Faith Bible College in Ankeny, IA, where she earned a One-Year Bible Certificate. Dan and Jodi met in a Singles group at church and were married in 1989.
