David and Christine Harms
are new missionaries with Mission Aviation Fellowship. They are
excited to join the MAF family and serve in Haiti. Psalm 91 has been a
meaningful passage of Scripture for them, reminding them that God is
faithful to provide their salvation and be their home, wherever they
may go.
God used David's lifelong interest in aviation when He called him to missions. Born in Tualatin, Oregon, he accepted Christ when he was four years old, following in the footsteps of his family. Growing up at Rolling Hills Community Church, David was fascinated by the MAF pilots who came through, but for most of his childhood, thought of aviation as merely a potential hobby. It wasn't until a high school retreat that he felt God calling him to missions. He had mission experiences in Mexico and Albania, that confirmed his calling. During that time, he found out about Moody Bible Institute's aviation degree, and felt that God meant to use his interest in aviation to advance His Kingdom. David was privileged to be part of Moody's first graduating class in Spokane, WA, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mission Aviation Technology in June 2007.
Although she had grown up in church in Tigard, OR, Christine had never really understood that Christ had died for her until age 9 when she overheard a camp counselor sharing the Gospel with another child. The Holy Spirit began to change her heart at that time, preparing her to be called into missions in early high school. Mission trips to Mexico and inner-city Portland, confirmed the calling, but not its direction--until she began dating a handsome young man who wanted to be a missionary pilot.
While at Wheaton College, she participated in an inner-city tutoring ministry in Chicago's Dearborn projects. Challenging though it was, Christine developed a great love for the children she worked with and knew God was calling her to teach. David and Christine married in August 2004 and finished their degrees in Spokane, WA. Christine graduated from Eastern Washington University with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and a Reading Endorsement in June 2007.
David looks forward to advancing the Gospel through his service as a
pilot, whether that means transporting Bibles, essential materials,
missionaries, government officials or those in need of medical help.
Being David's "ground crew" and making their home a welcoming a
smoothly running place is a primary goal for Christine. She also
anticipates discovering how how God will choose to use her gifts and
talents, especially her love of teaching, whether it be with
international, missionary, or national children. It is her hope,
especially in regard to missionary kids, that her service will enable
more missionary families to stay together on the field, since education
is a huge concern for many families.
