Adopt this Plane

Meet PK-MPO, affectionately called “Papa Oscar”!

This MAF Cessna 206 Turbo serving in Papua, Indonesia, derives its name from its registration call letters, PK-MPO. Some of its stories are fascinating … many of its flights are lifesaving … all of its service in Papua is life-sustaining. Welcome aboard!

The injured woman was near death. To transport her from the village of Dofu in northern Papua to the nearest hospital would have taken a week by boat, traveling on a crocodile infested river crisscrossed with numerous rapids. In her weakened condition, it is unlikely that she could have survived the arduous trip. Thankfully, Papa Oscar is stationed in Papua, and the victim was flown to the hospital in time to save her life.

The people of Dofu are not yet blessed with the Bible in their own language, and many of them do not clearly understand the Gospel. They are still deeply immersed in their often harmful traditions, such as killing others in retaliation for wrongs suffered. Papa Oscar is helping the people of Dofu obtain the Bible by flying Bible translators to their village, as well as other missionaries. Papa Oscar’s job is to save time, maximize ministry, and help missionaries be more effective.

For example, the Sougb people already possess the entire Bible in their own language. The missionary translator ministering among them instilled in the Sougb the desire to reach out to surrounding language groups with the Gospel. Now, five teams of Sougb missionaries are doing just that, and they fly from village to village aboard Papa Oscar.

Papa Oscar also supports the ministry of Dr. Julius, an Indonesian medical doctor. When he completed his medical studies, Dr. Julius was assigned an internship in Papua. Most doctors consider this a career-ending assignment. Dr. Julius, however, soon fell in love with the Papuans, and after completing his internship, he permanently moved among them. Today he flies on Papa Oscar from village to village, training national evangelists and pastors in basic medicine and healthcare. His seminars integrate spiritual truth with medical help as he encourages these Papuan ministers. Dr. Julius even provides a medical kit to each participant who attends his training so that each not only acquires knowledge but is equipped with resources to help people as well. Dr. Julius returns regularly to refill the medical kits with medicines.

Through the MAF Adopt-a-Plane program, you too can play a significant part in bringing medical help and the message of the Gospel to the people of Papua.

For just $1 a day, you can adopt Papa Oscar and help transform lives through this vital ministry. Please sign up today! On behalf of the missionaries and thousands of Papua’s needy who depend on MAF, thank you for your prayers and support. We thank God for you.
