Jon and Cher Cadd

Jon and Cher Cadd are missionaries with Mission Aviation Fellowship. After ministering for 22 wonderful years in Zimbabwe, the Cadds drove north and have been serving in East Democratic Republic of Congo (EDRC) for 10 years. Because of violent conditions they worked from Uganda for 3 years before moving first to Bunia, DRC and then to the village of Nyankunde, where the base that was destroyed in the last war is being rebuilt.

Jon is enjoying flying the Cessna Caravan after years of flying a 206. He says, “It is such a workhorse of a bush plane and great fun to fly.” They are still excited about all the wonderful things there are to see and learn in Congo. It is one of the most beautiful places on earth and includes the Ituri Forest, the second largest rain forest in the world. Opportunities to make a significant difference are as plentiful as one’s energy can accommodate. After being Chief Pilot for many years, Jon has now taken on the Program Manager duties while still helping to check out new pilots.

Acts 4:13 is a favorite verse of Jon’s. “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” Jon shares, “I am so glad that God chooses to use ordinary people like me. It is my only hope. Spending time with Him, actually letting time pass while I am with Him, is the secret to being like Him, which is my goal.”

Cher is finding learning new cultures and languages an adventure and is enjoying being part of a village after years in cities. The last line of Isaiah 49:23 says, “…those who hope in me (the Lord) will not be disappointed.” This reflects the real source of her peace.

Jon, the son of missionary parents, was born in Idaho and moved to the Philippines at age 10. He loved life there and became interested in mission aviation when he saw MAF pilots at work. Jon accepted Christ as his Savior in high school. He comments, “I had a few years of ‘craziness’ during my years at college, but like the prodigal son, I came back to God, my Father. This relationship is the joy of my life. I am so thankful for His amazing grace to me and hope I never forget what Jesus did for me on the cross.”

Jon studied at George Fox College and then at Portland Community College where he obtained his A&P licenses. He holds Airline Transport Pilot and Flight Instructor licenses, with Multi-Engine and Seaplane ratings as well as a Commercial Helicopter rating. He has 31 years and over 10,000 hours of safe flying with MAF.

Cher was born and raised in a Christian home in Oregon, and accepted Christ as her Savior at age 6. She received a B.S. degree at George Fox College, where she also met Jon. They were married in August 1972. They have two sons, Joshua and Caleb, who grew up in Zimbabwe. Joshua and Audra, daughter Raeleigh, and son, Gabriel, live in Nairobi, Kenya, where Josh is a Translation Consultant helping translate the Bible into sign languages for the deaf. Caleb and Jessica and their two children, Jullian and Scarlett, are living in Oregon.

The Cadds are amazed by and grateful for the faithful prayers and support of friends during the past 32 years. “It is such a continual blessing to us and such an encouragement. We can’t thank you enough.”
