David and Christine Harms joined the MAF family in January 2009 and moved to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in March 2010, just after the devastating earthquake which struck the country in January. Psalm 28 has proven true during their time there, that God is the strength of His people worldwide, the Good Shepherd who carries them forever. They welcomed their son Peter into their family in December 2012.
God used David’s lifelong interest in aviation when He called him to missions. Born in Tualatin, Oregon, David accepted Christ when he was four years old, following in the footsteps of his family. Growing up at Rolling Hills Community Church, David was fascinated by the visiting MAF pilots, but for most of his childhood, he thought of aviation as merely a potential hobby. It wasn’t until a high school retreat that he felt God was calling him to missions. His mission trips to Mexico and Albania confirmed his calling. During that time, David found out about Moody Bible Institute’s aviation degree and felt that God intended to use his interest in aviation to advance His Kingdom. He was privileged to be part of Moody’s first graduating class in Spokane, Washington, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mission Aviation Technology in June 2007.
Although she had grown up in church in Tigard, Oregon, Christine never really understood that Christ had died for her until age 9 when she overheard a camp counselor sharing the Gospel with another child. The Holy Spirit began to change her heart at that time, preparing her to be called into missions in early high school. Mission trips to Mexico and inner-city Portland, confirmed the calling, but not its direction – until she began dating a handsome young man who wanted to be a missionary pilot.
While at Wheaton College, she participated in an inner-city tutoring ministry in Chicago’s Dearborn projects. Challenging though it was, Christine developed a great love for the children she worked with and knew God was calling her to teach. David and Christine married in August 2004 and finished their degrees in Spokane, Washington. Christine graduated from Eastern Washington University with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and a Reading Endorsement in June 2007.
Since arriving on the field, God has used them both in a myriad of ways. David has been kept busy flying and maintaining the three Cessnas on our program. He has also been instrumental in keeping the computers and internet systems running. Christine has been able to contribute to operations at MAF’s hangar when she worked as the program’s scheduler for a year. Her teaching skills have also been put to good use in English classes for adults and knitting classes for people of all ages. Most of her time is currently spent chasing after Peter as he explores the world around him. They look forward to seeing what God has in store for their family during their next term.
God calls the men and women of MAF to serve Him in unique ways. He may also be calling you to a special role in the Harms’ ministry. Please prayerfully consider becoming a Ministry Partner with them through prayer and/or financial support.
