David and Donna Jacobsson

Dave and Donna Jacobsson are missionaries with Mission Aviation Fellowship assigned to eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since 1988. The recent four years, they served at the MAF base in Nyankunde where Dave worked as Base Manager, Interim Program Manager, and pilot/mechanic. After their furlough, Dave will work as an aircraft maintenance specialist at MAF headquarters in Nampa, Idaho for a 2 year assignment while their son, Andrew completes high school. Their older son Matthew, married to Annaliese, is a medical student at Pacific Northwest University in Yakima, WA.

Through the years, the Jacobssons have served the DRC flight needs from seven different MAF base locations in Congo, Kenya and Uganda. Dave worked as the East DRC program manager from 1997-2009 and at MAF headquarters in Idaho as an aircraft maintenance specialist, 2009-2011.

The flying in eastern DRC supports the Congolese church, Christian hospitals, Bible translation and literacy, and also crucial medical relief and crisis aid to vulnerable isolated people in areas that suffer from violence and insecurity. At our Nyankunde base, MAF is positioned in partnership with the Evangelical Medical Center (CME) making Christ-centered, quality healthcare more accessible in the region.

An important verse to Dave is John 9:4 (NIV). “As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.” Dave says, “Because of the many years of insecurity and war in DRC, and repeated evacuations, we live with a sense that time is short. We want to be available and ready for windows of opportunity to serve for however long opportunities exist.”

In Congo, Donna supervised Andrew’s online schooling, assisted flight operations through HF radio communications, participated in women’s ministries through their local church, and used her RN background teaching a medical English course at the Nyankunde Hospital Nursing School. An important verse to her is Hebrews 12:2a, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith...” She says, “This verse reminds me to keep my focus on Jesus Christ first and foremost. It is a humbling privilege to encourage and stand with Congolese believers sharing the truth, love and Good News of Jesus Christ.”

Born in Sweden, Dave is a 3rd generation missionary to Congo. He spent his early childhood in Sweden and California. Dave accepted Jesus as his Savior when he was six. He moved with his family to DRC (former Zaire) in 1972 where his parents served with the Swedish Pentecostal Mission. God called Dave to mission aviation through the death of a missionary pilot friend. He obtained his Airframe and Powerplant mechanic’s license from Clover Park Technical Institute in Tacoma, Washington, and earned his private and commercial pilot’s licenses, along with instrument ratings, in Santa Barbara, CA.

Donna grew up in Michigan, where her father pastored with the Free Methodist Church. She trusted Jesus as her Savior when she was eight. Donna received a BS in nursing from Seattle Pacific University and worked four years in Seattle as an RN. After a short-term mission trip to Haiti, she went to DRC in 1989, with the Free Methodist Mission as a nurse. Donna and Dave met in DRC where he was serving his first MAF term. They married in July 1990, in Bukavu, DRC.
