The verses above mean a great deal to Tim because they speak of God raising up highways and turning mountains into roads (overcoming barriers) to reach His 'afflicted ones.' Throughout their time in Brazil, this characterizes the Johnsons' ministry as they have been transferring MAF "know-how" to Asas de Socorro (MAF Brazil) and helping Brazil prepare to become even another sending country out into the world.
After 24 years there, Tim has stepped out of the flying role, but continues in maintenance support, having been asked to manage the float plane maintenance facility in Manaus. He is grateful for the chance to have flown just over 4700 hours, and help in the preparation and/or continuing education of nine other pilots.
Tim was raised in Papua New Guinea, where his father served as a missionary pilot. His family influence and contact with the Navigators helped draw Tim to a decision to commit his life to the Lord. As he continued to grow spiritually, the Lord confirmed his call to mission aviation and, after earning the needed Bible and aviation training, Tim was accepted by MAF in 1986.
Luce is from midwestern Brazil, and also came to know the Lord as her personal Savior through the influence of her family, at the age of 19. Luce earned a BA degree in nursing and continued on for two years of Bible training, before being invited to work with Asas de Socorro, coordinating medical, dental and evangelistic clinics. It was here that Tim and Luce met; they were married in 1991.
For Luce, Luke 18:29-30, keeps things in perspective. "'I tell you the truth,' Jesus said to them, 'no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many times as much in this age and, in the age to come, eternal life.'"
Luce served twice as a member of the Asas Board of Directors, coordinated mission activities in Boa Vista, and provided a welcomed friendly voice on the daily radio contacts with folks out in "the woods." In Manaus, she is once again coordinating medical outreach trips with groups from Brazilian churches - but this time on the Asas boat.
God calls the men and women of MAF to serve Him in unique ways. He may also be calling you to a special role in the Johnsons' ministry. Please prayerfully consider becoming a Ministry Partner with them through prayer and/or financial support.
