Help bring relief to over 60,000 displaced people...

You can bring relief to the people devastated by the Indonesian tsunami!

A 7.4 earthquake struck the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, on Friday, Sept. 28, 2018. This caused a tsunami to strike parts of the island. The tsunami was particularly devastating to the city of Palu. The initial death toll is in the hundreds and expected to rise as the destruction continues to impact the living conditions for the survivors in the area.

"1.5 million people affected (exposed to moderate and strong shaking), around 537,000 people were exposed to strong shaking as well as potentially directly affected by the following tsunami and liquefaction. Around 191,000 people in urgent needs of humanitarian assistance. Initial reports (as at 3 October, 1300 hrs Jakarta time) BNPB has confirmed 1,234 fatalities with over 632 injuries, 99 missing persons, 152 are requiring immediately rescue efforts. There are currently over 61,867 evacuees being housed in 109 evacuation sites. Note that these figures are still expected to rise."

MAF’s Disaster Response Team is responding to the crisis in Sulawesi, Indonesia

Following an earthquake and tsunami on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, MAF is mobilizing our personnel and airplanes to help. MAF has some 150 staff and 15 aircraft based full-time in Papua and Kalimantan, Indonesia. An MAF team is in Palu assessing needs and setting up a satellite communication system.

After a flight to assess the damage in the hardest-hit areas, MAF pilot Rick Emenaker reported that “the main road going out of Palu city to the south is completely gone in one section. The ground liquefied and has destroyed probably a good half mile of the road and there’s no way to get around it. People are isolated and I know there’s a great need. The village where we were at with about 5,000 people—they’re hurting. Others south of there are also hurting.”

Now that our personnel are in place, they will be able to more accurately determine how MAF can assist. MAF will be working closely with other NGOs in the area to provide air transportation and help those in crisis.

When natural disasters happen, MAF is able to bring hope directly—and enables the work of other organizations that are also responding.

The road to recovery for the survivors of the Palu tsunami has just begun.

Because of you, MAF is able to respond when disasters like this one strike. The generous donations of people like you can bring hope to the hurting even in the darkest of times.
