  • How can I install Estante onto my device from a Web link?


    1. Type the web address into your Web browser and go to that site using your Android™ device. Or, on your device, open up the email inviting you to download Estante and tap on the link.
    2. Login in or register for an account. Be sure to fill in all the areas with a red asterisk.
    3. After you fill out the account information, you will be redirected to the download page. You will also receive an email with the download link. Tap on the file download link (from either your email or on the Estante download page). The app will start downloading to the Downloads folder on your device.
    4. On your device, tap the Apps icon and search for the Downloads icon.
    5. Tap on the downloads folder. This will take you directly to the folder where the Estante app was downloaded.
    6. Tap on the Estante file to install it.
    7. When you tap on the file, some devices (like a Kindle or Nook) have default settings that won’t allow installation of programs from an unknown source. Do the following to allow Estante to be installed:
      1. Follow the instructions on your device on how to change the settings. For the Kindle, tap on "Settings".
      2. From the device's Settings screen, tap on "Allow installation of Applications" to toggle it from "off" to "on".
      3. You may get another warning window, tap "OK".
    8. You may get a pop-up window showing what will be done during installation, depending on your device. Tap "Install"
    9. An installation screen will appear and show the progress of installing the file.
    10. When Estante is finished installing you should see the message "Application installed." Tap "Open" to start working with Estante.
  • How can I change the language of Estante's interface?

    Estante comes with a limited number of languages that you can use for its interface.

    Use a language provided in Estante
    1. On your Estante home page, tap the gear icon in the upper right.
    2. Under options, choose interface. This takes you to the Change Language page.
    3. Tap the icon to the right of the listed language. This will open a list of available languages at the bottom of the page.
    4. Select the language.
    5. Tap done.
    6. Tap Submit.
    Translate and use a language that is not provided

    This method will require that you translate the words used in the interface into the language of your choice. Once translated, you can add the language to the list of available languages.

    1. On your Estante home page, tap the gear icon in the upper right.
    2. Under options, choose interface. This takes you to the Change Language page.
    3. Scroll down the page until you get to “Change Current Language Text” and follow the instructions there.
    4. Under Title, enter the language name.
    5. Tap Submit.

    You will find your language now under the list of available languages. Follow the directions above to make that language the default language.

  • How can I update Estante?

    You can update Estante easily through the Estante app itself.


    1. Open the Estante app
    2. Tap on the gear icon to get to the Options Menu
    3. Tap on "About"
    4. Look for the Software Updates section, near the bottom of the page. Tap on "Check for Update."
  • How can I download the latest version of Estante?

    If you downloaded Estante the first time via the web, you are registered and will be notified of any new versions via email (as long as you are subscribed to "Software Update Notifications"). If you received the Estante installer package from a friend, you can do either of the two options below.


    1. Download and install Estante from the web. Refer to "How can I install Estante onto my device from a Web link?"

    2. Receiving the Estante installer package from a friend. Refer to "How can I share the Estante app with a friend?"

    Note: Be sure that the Estante you are getting is a newer version. You can find out what version you have by tapping "About" in the application menu.

  • How can I share the Estante app with a friend?


    1. You and your friend both need to have a way to connect. You can use Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct, or Wi-Fi.
    2. You must have the Estante installer package. This is the file that you downloaded when you got your Estante. This file name ends in .apk. This file can usually be found in your "downloads" folder.


    1. After you find the Estante installer package, tap the check box next to the file.
    2. Find the share icon and tap on it.
    3. From the list, choose the method you prefer and follow your device’s instructions.
  • How can I find Estante on my device?
    1. Tap on the Applications (Apps) icon

  • How can I share my entire Estante library with someone who has Estante?


    1. You and your friend must both have Estante installed on your devices.
    2. Your devices must be connected to a local Wi-Fi network or using Wi-Fi Direct.

    On Both devices:
    1. On your device, go to settings and look for Wi-Fi Direct.
    2. Turn on Wi-Fi Direct. Note the name of the device.
    On your device:
    1. Select your friend's device under Available Devices.
    2. Tap to connect.
    On your friend's device:
    1. Your friend should get a notice "Invitation to connect."
    2. Tap Accept.
    On your device:
    1. Open the Estante app and tap on the settings icon (three small squares on top of one another), above the gear icon.
    2. Tap on "Send Library"
    3. A QR code will appear on your screen.
    On your friend's device:
    1. Open the Estante app and tap on the settings icon (three small squares on top of one another), above the gear icon.
    2. Tap on "Receive Resources", which turns on your rear-facing camera.
    3. Have your friend act like they are taking a ‘picture' of the QR code on your screen with their device. When the camera can see the full QR code, a new screen will appear with a "Get" button. Tap the "Get" button to get all the resources from your library.
  • How can I share resources offline with Bluetooth?

  • How can I use WiFi (QR code) to share a resource?


    On both devices:
    1. Go to the Android Settings and look for WiFi networks.
    2. Connect both devices to the same WiFi network. You are now ready to transfer the resource using the QR code.
    3. Open Estante on both devices.
    4. Choose the resource you want to share with your friend by tapping on the gear icon next to it.
    5. At the top of the screen, tap on the QR code (labeled "Send to Estante").
    6. Your friend needs to open the Estante menu in the upper right corner of Estante (the 3 boxes on top of each other).
    7. Select "Receive Resources." This turns on the device's rear-facing camera.
    8. Then have your friend point the camera at your screen, your device will automatically capture the QR code.
    9. Once the QR code is captured, the device brings up the "Sync" page. Tap "Get" to receive the resource. The document will be put into the same category it was in on your friend's Estante Library. 
  • How can I share resources offline with Wi-Fi Direct?

  • How can I add new content to Estante?

    You can easily add new resources from your device that are compatible with Estante.


    1. From the Estante Library, determine which category you wish to keep the new content in. In this example, we'll add a new document.
    2. Under the Documents heading, tap "Add File"
    3. Add title for the document, then tap on the "Choose File" button to find the document you wish to add.
    4. You will need to find the document from your device's file storage. You may select only one file at a time.
    5. Once you've selected the file, tap the "Submit" button
    6. Your document will now appear in the Documents folder.
    The following document types are compatible with Estante:

    Some of the above file types may require an app to be installed on your device in order to read them. The following are suggested apps and the file types they support:

    • Kindle: .pdf
    • FBReader: .epub
    • Think Free Office: .doc, .docx
  • How can I get additional help with Estante?

    Estante comes with built-in help videos and written instructions. The FAQs on this page also provide valuable information. If you are not able to find an answer to your question in these two places, feel free to visit the Estante Users Google Group where you can post your question and developers or other Estante users can respond.


    Where to find Help on your device
    1. On the Estante home screen, tap the gear icon in the upper right.
    2. Under Options, choose Help. This will bring up a list of help items. Tap on the topic you are interested in learning more information about.

  • How can I uninstall Estante?


    Note: uninstalling Estante will remove all of the resources stored in your Estante library. There is no way to get them back, unless you have a copy of them saved elsewhere.

    You can uninstall Estante in the same manner you uninstall your other apps on your device.

    1. Open the Android Settings
    2. Scroll down and tap on Applications
    3. Scroll down the list of Applications until you find Estante and tap on it.
    4. Tap the Uninstall button in the top right
    5. Tap "Yes" to complete the Uninstall

Estante is compatible with Android™ mobile phones and/or tablets.

Operating System:

  • Recommended: Android™ 4.0 (or newer)
  • Minimum: Android™ 3.0

Recommended Device Features:

  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • MicroSD card or compatible storage device
  • Built-in rear-facing camera
  • Bluetooth (for sharing files with feature phones)
