Dave and Jean Wunsch joined Mission Aviation Fellowship in 1976. They served five terms in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. During these years Dave held various positions including pilot/mechanic, base manager, flight operations manager, and program manager. In 1993 they moved to MAF headquarters in California where Dave became the Regional Director for MAF’s Asia programs. In 2006 MAF headquarters re-located to Nampa, Idaho. Dave continues to serve as Director of Special Projects. His focus is on critical issues affecting MAF programs worldwide. He is planning to retire in 2018.
Jean has been the Senior Coach in the Ministry Partnership Department, training and guiding new staff members as they build a team of prayer and financial supporters. On December 30, 2016, she moved into retirement. She is currently involved with their church, supporting Dave, and exploring how God wants to use her in this new season.
A verse that encourages them is Psalm 71:17,18. “Since my youth, O God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds. Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, Your might to all who are to come.” They look forward to how God will use them to glorify His name and share His great faithfulness in their lives.
Dave was born in Kingman, Arizona, but grew up in Papua New Guinea where his parents were pioneer missionaries in the interior. His mother had the joy of leading him to Christ when he was four years old. He attended Lewis University in Lockport, Illinois, where he earned a B.S. degree in aviation management. He received an M.A. in Management and International Business from the University of Redlands. Dave has completed additional course work at Chicago State University and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He holds a commercial pilot’s license with instrument and multi-engine ratings, and is a licensed airframe and powerplant mechanic.
Jean was born and raised in Chad, Africa, where her parents served as missionaries for more than 30 years. She accepted Christ as her Savior when she was 11. The joy she saw in her parents’ lives gave her the desire to serve the Lord on the mission field. She spent her high school years in Illinois and studied at Emmaus Bible College. Dave and Jean met while he was a student at Chicago State University, and they married in 1971.
Dave and Jean have two adult children. Karin is supervisor of mail services at MAF headquarters. Carl works in law enforcement in Phoenix, Arizona, and his wife, Kristen is a court reporter. Dave and Jean were thrilled to welcome their first grandchild, Carter Gabriel, in 2013, and Garret Christian joined the family in 2016. They are so thankful for these precious blessings!
God calls the men and women of MAF to serve Him in unique ways. He may also be calling you to a special role in Dave and Jean’s ministry. Please prayerfully consider becoming a Ministry Partner with them through prayer and/or financial support.
